What's the difference b/w buying salon shampoos at the salon or at a store??

CVS sells redken, rusk, paul mitchell.. etc. But is it the same quality? Or is it better to buy it at a salon. Some salons have signs posted saying that they do not back up any products, even name brand, sold outside of a salon.What's the difference b/w buying salon shampoos at the salon or at a store??
