Is it better to get hair dyed at a salon or at home?

are they about the same or are they different? why is one better than the other? Is it better to get hair dyed at a salon or at home?
There are pros and cons to each one. If you dye your hair at home, of course you will save money, you can do it privately, and it's easy. If you get your hair dyed professionally, there are usually no mistakes, you get exactly what you want, the mixture of developer and color is such that it is as least damaging as possible, and you just relax.

As far as cons go, dyeing your hair at home can be a mess, you might not get the right color, the high amounts of ammonia in the color damages your hair, and most brown shades will fade to a copper or red color. The only con I can think of for doing it at the salon is it costs a little more. Or if you come in after doing a box color and you want to ';fix'; it, that's color correction and that will cost you twice what you could have just paid for regular color.

Yeah, doing it at home is cheaper, but remember, you get what you pay for. Hope this helps. Is it better to get hair dyed at a salon or at home?
I appreciate the answers by zila girl, Libby and Kish because this is what I've been preaching here on this site.

As a professional, I've seen and corrected many bad home colors. Everything they said is true. What most people don;t know is how haircolor works and that's why they have problems. Things like tint not lifting tint, the color you see on the box is not necessarily what you get, and the fact that we often mix colors to formulate the right color are part of the education we have.....but one of my pet peeves is when you get that regrowth and they don't realized that applying tint over tint, eventually results in uneven color and damaged hair. Have you ever seen a blonde with colors ranging from brassy gold at the roots to pure white at the ends. That's because every time you apply the light color it keeps lightening it all to the next level. Same with dark hair...keeps getting darker towards the ends.....and all that causes damage as it keeps opening the cuticle of the hair shaft. Also knowing what volume of peroxide...lower to deposit color, higher to lift. Most box color has 20 and for dark hair you only need 10.

So I always suggest going to a salon, and the large majority will be much happier with better results.

It's important to consult with the stylist and feel confident with them, that they know what you want, and are experienced in it;

edit....and of course gravesto who posted after I started writing....a fellow professional
Absolutely at a salon! You're working with chemicals! Dying hair is a very complicated process, because there are a lot of things that can go wrong, such as damaging the hair, not getting the correct color, getting a color that doesn't compliment your skin tone, among other things. Hairdressers are trained to work with different types of hair to create all sorts of different colors, and even then THEY make mistakes too! I firmly believe that unless you're putting temporary hair color in your hair for one occasion, leave it to the professionals!
at the salon is always better.

- at the salon we are trained professionals. we know how to mix the perfect formula to fit your needs and decide what will look best for you.

- we have everything we need there. no mess to clean up. no reason to buy extra things.

- for highlighting, i would never recommend you attempt yourselfs. since we can foil in pieces, we know exactly where that hair will fall. and how much to process it without turning it orange or breaking it.

- color is tricky too because if you dont mix it properly you could get hot roots [where the root is lighter then your ends] or black ends from your overprocessed hair. plus, you cant see your entire head, so I think that you miss massive roots and pieces in the back leaving it spotty.

plus, most people that attempt to do their hair at home usually come to the salon to get it fixed once its messed up. Then you spend 3 times as much for corective color then if you came to us in the first place! =]
At a salon, the professionals are the best. Home hair dye kits are fine if you use them properly and select a good product, but they're not as good as a salon. A hair dresser can mix the dye solution to suit your individual needs, and they know all the right techniques to achieve the best result. Only a pro who's had practice can do that.

=D good look.
it depends, if youre only changing the colour slightly you should be fine doing it at home but if youre going quite drastic e.g dark to blonde i'd always go to a salon because i just did that exact thing at home and had to get half my hair cut off because i ruined it. So safest bet is to go to the salon unless its a fairly similar colour :)
Salon..it is not the same..people assume that what they see on the box is what they are going to get..not true..you have to know your natural color level..also color does not lift color..say you colored your hair a burnette but a couple weeks later you wanted a light auburn..noy going to happen out of a box..also when you have your hair colored at a salon your stylist knows exactly what to formulate and usually salon colors are not as harsh on your hair..save up the extra money and go to a salon it is much better in the long run!
well...if you go to the right salon then its not bad for your hair, if you do it at home then it dries it out. trust me, my mom has always dyed her hair at home and its dry as heck, but my aunt, who's the same age as her, dyes hers in a salon and her hair is nice and soft
salon is better for intense things like bleaching and highlighting but if you are doing an all over color that isn't an extreme change from your natural color then i would just do it at home. i ususally do mine at home and it comes out fine!
hi dear... good question

wel its the same every where...

BUT the thing which Matters is who is doing it.. u can experiment for ur self ,

i advise u to dye hair @ a saloon near by cuz dyein needs lil experience....

even lil bit of mistake can be easily seen...

so go for the saloon and see how they do it n dn try it out!

al the best..
At home ovcourse, if you aint adding any highlights.. but if you are then you should do it in the hairdressers, but if you aint, it is waste of moeny paying the hairdresser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heard that getting your hair dyed at a salon is better and I agree because the hair stylist knows what their doing with your hair
At home. Most salons mess up, once they dyed my mom's hair green!
home!!! its cheaper and works just as well
salon, a good one.
